The NSW Institute of Psychiatry
has mental health courses specifically designed for GPs. These
include programmes for Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma
and Masters, as well as 'stand alone' courses covering topics
such as CBT, IPT, Supportive Psychotherapy, Abnormal Illness Behaviour
and eating disorders. There are short workshops (1-3 days) also

Institute for Emotionally
Focused Therapy: Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Emotionally
Focused Therapy.
The Graduate Certificate is a
flexible, one to three year programme involving compulsory and
elective courses and workshops, as well as supervision. The focus
is on using emotionally focused therapy in counselling, and candidates
will be taught structured and flexible protocols for assessment
and counselling. Practitioners who have completed prior training
with the Institute may be eligible to apply for advanced standing.
Costs vary depending on the subjects or workshops chosen, enrolment
is $85 the first year and $45 each subsequent year.
The Graduate Diploma is a more in-depth programme, varying
from two to four years, and candidates are required to complete
more courses and supervision.

Australian General Courses in Hypnosis-CBT
Courses for The Certificates
of Clinical & Advanced Clinical Hypnosis will
be held in Sydney, Melbourne & Brisbane and Newcastle in 2008.
courses include Hypnosis & Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT),
Counselling, Relaxation, Guided Imagery & Stress Management.
Early bird fees will apply for all courses.
The courses are accredited by the GPMHSC to use the Medicare mental
health item numbers when using FPS (Focussed psychological Strategies).
They are also approved for mental health & CPD for 94 points
by the ACRRM & also by the RACGP ( an application is pending
for 6 ALMs = 240 CPD points).
The certificate courses lead on to the Diploma of Clinical Hypnosis
with further training.

Balint: 2007
ONGOING BALINT GROUP IN LANE COVE
(Sydney)
• An ongoing Balint Group is being established in Lane Cove.
A core group of interested GP's is ready to
start meeting on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month (school
terms only).
• There is an opportunity for other GPs to join the group.

A Balint group is an experiential, small group educational activity
in which practising GPs meeting regularly to discuss difficult
or intriguing cases. The focus is on the psychological aspects
of general practice, and particularly the emotional content of
the doctor-patient relationship. The group is a supportive setting
in which GPs can rediscover the human side of general practice,
add a refreshing new dimension to their work and avoid burnout.

Balint:
The Balint Society of Australia supports GPs and Balint group
leaders in starting and maintaining Balint groups. These are small
groups of GPs who meet regularly to discuss difficult patients.
These groups offer a unique and invaluable approach to the psychological
aspects of general practice. The Society provides a free Email
newsletter, contacts in each state, opportunities to join or establish
ongoing groups, workshops and scientific meetings, and a forthcoming
