The Postgraduate Course in Psychiatry (PCP)

The Postgraduate Course in Psychiatry (PCP) is a course designed for trainee psychiatrists in their first three years of specialist training. The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) requires all Basic Trainees to undertake an approved Formal Education Course to complement their clinical training experience, and the RANZCP has accredited the PCP for this purpose.

The course was first offered to students in 2001, and was accredited by the NSW Department of Education and Training as a Masters level course in the same year. In 2006-7, the course was extensively restructured in light of constructive feedback from students, tutors and other stakeholders, and is undergoing further significant revision in 2009.

Students who satisfactorily complete all the components of the course, including all assessment tasks, qualify for the award of Master of Psychiatry. Students may also choose to study the course as non-degree students, which meets RANZCP training requirements but does not lead to the award of a degree.

The Master of Psychiatry is intended for those wishing to gain an academic postgraduate qualification in psychiatry. Students benefit from increased academic rigour and for one semester they work on their own research project.
